Wilhelmina “Willy” McDaniel, 80, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 2:05 A.M. September 5, 2019 at her residence. She was born January 28, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Eugene and Ruth (Richardson) Walters. Wilhelmina married Don McDaniel on May 3, 1958 at the United Methodist Church in Kell, Illinois. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage.
In addition to her husband, Willy is survived by her children, Diana Hayes of Dix, Michelle Rostollan and husband, Mark of Mount Vernon, and Mike McDaniel and wife, Doris of Kell; grandchildren, Chris Shelton and wife, Kim, Taylor Bruce and husband, Tommy, Marissa Rostollan, Miranda Rostollan, and Ashton Woodward; great-grandchildren, Colton Shelton and Trenton Shelton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Willy was preceded in death by her brothers, Marshall Walters and Bill Walters; and cherished best friend, Peggy Lisenby.
Willy loved to read. She instilled that love of reading in her daughters by spending quality time in Brehm Library. She later converted a spare bedroom into her own personal library. She also loved to garden and watch cooking shows on TV.
Willy was a Christian who loved serving God. She taught Sunday school, youth group, and choir at the Union Chapel Church for many years. She was part of a ladies Bible study group called Happy Hour for over 40 years and enjoyed meeting for lunch each month who those special ladies. Willy was a member of Grace Community Church and spent some of her retirement volunteering in the church office. She was actively involved in her small group and church until her failing health.
Willy was very proud of her work at both Field School and the United Methodist Children’s Home. She made and kept lifelong friendships with several coworkers.
Willy was a person who loved people. She was known to many by her beautiful red hair, her humor, and her laughter. Willy loved having fun. She was a blessing and joy to all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 A.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Pastor Jason E. Newell officiating. Memorials may be made in Willy’s honor to the Grace Community Church.
