Vera A Whiteside

October 14, 1930 ~ March 15, 2019 (age 88)

Vera A. Whiteside, 88, of Shiloh, Ilinois passed away at 9:00 A.M. March 15, 2019 at her residence in Shiloh, illinois. She was born October 14, 1930 in Aurora, Illinois to the late Bryson and Mildred (Graver) Pennington.

Vera is survived by her sons, Everett Whiteside and wife, Haley of Pensacola, Florida and Nick Whiteside and wife, Bridget of O’Fallon, Illinois; grandchildren, Bryson Whiteside, Riley Grissom, Patrick Grissom, Liam Whiteside, Brody Whiteside, and Evelyn Whiteside; two nieces, Janine Mathai and Colleen Childrey; and nephew, Jeffrey Pennington.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Bryson and Mildred (Graver) Pennington, and brother, Myron Pennington.

Vera loved athletics her entire life and started competitive running at age 48. She medaled in the National Senior Olympic Games over a span of twenty two years. Vera enjoyed watching her sons run cross country at Mount Vernon Township High School. She continued to be active in cross county supporting the MVTHS program for over 25 years, encouraging young runners’ lives.  Vera was the honorary matriarch of the Road Warriors running group, inspiring countless others to realize their personal fitness goals.  Vera received her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. She received her Master’s Degree in Library Science at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Carbondale, Illinois. Vera worked in education most of her life finishing her career at Wayne City High School as a Librarian and Scholar Bowl Coach and at the Mammoth Department Store as a book keeper for 21 years before retiring.  

A Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A memorial service will follow at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Mrs. Gitta Brink officiating.  In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or the Audubon Society.
