Ruby Cope, 87, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away 12:27 P.M. March 8, 2018 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital. She was born April 10, 1930 in McLeansboro, Illinois to the late Harold and Eileen (Dailey) York. Ruby married Joe H. Cope on November 10, 1949 in Morganfield, Kentucky. They were blessed with 48 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 20, 1998.
Ruby is survived by her children, J.B. Cope and wife, Rhonda and Debbie Lacey and husband, Steve, both of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Julie Lacey French and husband, Jason of Saint Charles, Missouri, Melissa Lacey Elliott and husband, Blake of Mount Vernon, Christopher Cope and wife, Hillary of Mount Vernon, and Courtney Cope Durham and husband, Calen of Mount Vernon; and nine great-grandchildren.
Ruby worked from open to close every day at the Woolworth Department Store in Mount Vernon for several years until her retirement. She was a member of The First Baptist Church in McLeansboro, Am Vets #4 Auxiliary, American Legion #141 Auxiliary, VFW #1376 Auxiliary, Women of the Moose Mount Vernon Lodge, and McLeansboro Elks Lodge Auxiliary. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Ruby will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at Independent Order of Oddfellows Cemetery in McLeansboro, Illinois. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Ruby’s honor to the American Parkinson Disease Association: Saint Louis Chapter or the American Cancer Society.
