Roy L. Gibbs, 59, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 11:20 A.M. October 12, 2019 at his residence. He was born August 9, 1960 in Mount Vernon to the late Wayne and Eva (York) Gibbs.
Roy attended Horace Mann School and Mount Vernon Township High School, graduating in 1979. He started work at a young age and learned how to cook working at the Top of the First. Roy owned his own business, Gibbs Heating and Cooling. He relocated to Gulf Shores, Alabama to help his brother, Ronnie. After a few short years, he returned to his beloved Mount Vernon. He worked at Continental Tire until his health declined.
On September 25, 2010, Roy married the love of his life, Sherry (Krutsinger Nix) Gibbs. In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by his daughters, Shelli Neal and husband, Bruce of Hephzibah, Georgia and Wendy Jacobs and husband, DJ of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandson, Kyle Nix of Benton, Illinois; granddaughters, Teneal Hardin, Tori Billberry, and TaRaya Billberry, all of Georgia; and special friends, Kevin, Jay, and Monty.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Gibbs; granddaughter, Teneva Archie; mother-in-law, Eileen Krutsinger; and his beloved dog, Doodie.
Roy loved Star Trek and watching John Wayne movies. He played the drums and enjoyed singing karaoke. Roy’s brother, Ronnie, lovingly nicknamed him, “Moochie.” He loved telling stories. One of his favorite things to say was, “Do you want to hear a story?” His friend Kevin said, “I don’t think I ever heard the same version twice.” Roy loved seafood and his favorite place to visit was Daytona Beach, Florida, where he could certainly get his fill. Roy was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 A.M. with Mr. Terry McAlexander officiating. Interment will follow at Cisne Cemetery in Cisne, Illinois.
