Robert D. Deitz, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 8:55 P.M. August 31, 2018 at Nature Trail Health Care Center. He was born August 10, 1932 in McLeansboro, Illinois to the late Bob and Necie (Mezo) Deitz. Robert married Joan (Viers) Deitz on December 15, 1951. They were blessed with nearly 67 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his son, Robert Douglas Deitz and wife, Teresa of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Amanda Neal and husband, Jacob and Adam Deitz, all of Mount Vernon; siblings, Richard “Dick” Deitz and wife, Sue of McLeansboro, Illinois and Priscilla Anderson of Cincinatti, Ohio; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Deitz of Mount Vernon.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Charles “Chick” Deitz.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army as an Infantry Rifleman during the Korean Conflict. He began working in the newspaper industry during high school at the McLeansboro Times-Leader. He spent most of his career working with his brothers at the Mount Vernon Register News. Bob was the printing foreman for many years. He was also an IHSA member basketball official for many years. Bob was a man of great faith and loved spending time with his family. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Mr. Marty Mills officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #141. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Robert’s honor to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
