Peggy Joyce Porter, 88, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 1:00 A.M. November 19, 2019 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor. She was born November 17, 1931 in Bluford, Illinois to the late Lester and Meda (Miller) Breeze. She married Richard C. Porter on December 5, 1947 in Morganfield, Kentucky and he preceded her in death on May 30, 2006.
Peggy is survived by her five sons, Richard Joseph “Dick” Porter and wife, Claudette of Bluford, Carl Wayne “Jug” Porter and special friend, Diane of Bluford, Dennis S. Porter and wife, Hazel of Tennessee, Michael E. Porter and special friend, Jo of Tennessee, and Brian K. Porter of Salem; ten grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; twenty-three foster children; and one sister, Betty Albright of Mount Vernon.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband of fifty-eight years, Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by her seven brothers, Oran Breeze, Clifford Breeze, John D. Breeze, Ronald Breeze, Dean Breeze, Rev. Donald Breeze, and Rev. Gale Breeze and one sister, Opal Blake.
Throughout her lifetime with her husband, Peggy ran several businesses in the Bluford area, including; Bluford Furniture, Porter’s Restaurant, Porter’s Lake, and Porter’s Auction Service. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, was dearly loved, and will be missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 22, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 P.M. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home with Reverend David Shores officiating. Interment will follow at Mateer-Davis Cemetery in Wayne County, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Mateer-Davis Cemetery.
