Mary Lou Scarber, 87, of Cordell, Oklahoma, formerly of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away August 19, 2019 in Cordell, Oklahoma. She was born November 17, 1931 in Mount Vernon to the late Charles William and Mary N. (Henn) East. She married Oscar Eugene "Bud" Scarber on May 2, 1953 in Mount Vernon, Illinois and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1977.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Linda Scarber-Chain of Fairview, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Shelly Darlene Hughey of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Tabitha Thompson and husband, Lee of Cordell, Oklahoma, and David Summers and wife, Debra of Mount Vernon, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Eric Summers, Ashley Summers, Brianna Stewart, Sadie Stewart, Alex Paul Hughey, and Curshell Lynn McCoy; and several great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her special friend, Bill Mayo; siblings, James East, Raymond East, Chuck East, Roy Gene Fancher, and Virginia Arborgast; and son-in-law, Al Chain.
Mary worked for 47 years as a waitress as several area restaurants, such as Dolly’s Café and Virginia’s. She also worked as a caretaker for the elderly in their homes for 20 years. Mary was of the Protestant faith and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Mary was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held Monday, August 26, 2019 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 9:00 A.M. at Sursa Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Mr. Marty Mills officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Mary’s honor to Sursa Cemetery.
