Leona Vannatta

November 15, 1919 ~ March 5, 2019 (age 99)

Leona Vannatta, 99, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 2:40 P.M. March 5, 2019 at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born November 15, 1919 in Rural Bluford, Illinois to the late William J. Bean and Maude A. Voyles. She married the late George Frederick Vannatta on July 24, 1939 in Jackson, Missiouri. They were blessed with nearly forty-nine years of marriage before he preceded her in death on July 8, 1988.

 

Leona is survived by her daughter-in-law, Carol S. Vannatta of Bluford, Illinois; grandchildren, Lonna Hodge and husband, Greg of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Lisa Wilm and husband, David of McHenry, Illinois; great grandchildren, Michael Hodge, Christina Hodge, Caroline Wilm, Abigail Wilm, Zachary Wilm; nieces and nephews, Patricia Dare and husband, David of Hamburg, Michigan, Tina Barnes and special friend, Albert Shelley of Pittsburg, Illinois, Mike Bean and wife, Marsha of Bonnie, Illinois, and Sylvia Brinkmeier and husband, Gary of Pearl City, Illinois; also many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, Leona was preceded in death by her son, Lonnie Vannatta; sisters, Alice Shaw and Elsie Shaffer; and brothers, Clyde and Roy Bean.

 

She worked at International Shoe Factory in Mount Vernon and was a cook for Opdyke Grade School. She was a member of Summersville Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and loved flowers and red birds. She loved socializing with friends and family. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life. Some say she lived a long life because she didn’t worry about obtaining more things but rather just being with family.

 

A Visitation will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 12:30 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Summersville Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Summersville Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Don Verhines officiating.  Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Summersville Baptist Church.
