Karl Marvin Powers

September 11, 1940 ~ March 5, 2019 (age 78)

Karl Marvin Powers, 78, of Mt. Vernon, IL, passed away at 10:30 p.m. March 5, 2019, at Mt. Vernon Residential Living Center. He was born September 11, 1940, in Mt. Vernon, IL, to the late J. Marvin Powers and Helen Lucille (Estes) Powers. He married Evelyn Joyce (Lamb) Powers on August 11, 1963, at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, IL. They were blessed with nearly fifty-six years of marriage before he preceded her in death.

Karl is survived by his wife, Evelyn Joyce Powers, of Mt. Vernon, IL; children, Tiffany (Kevin) Ford of Mt. Vernon, IL, Amanda “Luci” Welling of Mt. Vernon, IL, Tim Powers of Texico, IL; grandchildren, Brittany Sanders of Mt. Vernon, IL, Jake Powers and Paige Powers and their mother, Angie Powers, of Mt. Vernon, IL, Blake Ford of Mt. Vernon, IL;  step-grandchildren, Charissa Ford of Pittsburgh, PA, Karita Ford of Annapolis, MD; great-granddaughter, Brynlee Sanders of Mt. Vernon, IL; and sister, Wanda (Chuck) Cohoon of Marion, IL. He is also survived by brothers-in-law: Bob (Barbara) Lamb and Mike Lamb; sisters-in-law: Dorothy (Russell) Bingham, Virginia Rickman, Marolyn Gibson, Barbara Stephenson, Linda Jo Lamb, and Sharon Pratt; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Karl was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Jean (Pookey) Pentecost. He was also preceded by mother and father-in-law, Leeper and Isabelle Lamb, and brothers-in-law: Murrel Rickman, Charles Lamb, Dale Gibson, Ray Pratt, and Jerry Lamb; and sister-in-law, Joan Lamb.

Karl worked as a dispatcher and LEADS director at the Mt Vernon Police Department, as well as serving as Mt. Vernon City Clerk from 1985 to 2001. He was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church, the Illinois Municipal League, and served on the board of directors of Security Bank & Trust. Karl was a real “people person” and never met a stranger. He loved his family and had a soft spot for babies and dogs. A little over a year ago, he was blessed with his first great grandchild and she brought tremendous joy into his life. He will be dearly missed.

A visitation will be held 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, IL. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Bill Howard officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Memorial Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
