John Henry Lemons, 95, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 6:35 P.M. March 2, 2019 at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was born August 9, 1923 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Clyde N. and Susie (Kahn) Lemons. He married Margaret "Marge" E. Lemons on August 16, 1942 in Old Monroe, Missouri. They were blessed with 71 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on November 2, 2013.
John is survived by his two sons, Harold Lemons and special friend, Charlotta Whitaker of Ina, Illinois, and William “Bill” Lemons and special friend, Vikki Page; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Beth Lemons; and sister-in-law, Barbara Lemons.
John was preceded in death by his parents, son, Mike Lemons; daughter, Dorris Lemons; two brothers; three sisters; granddaughter, Angela Jean Lemons; grandson, Harold Lemons, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Norma Jean Lemons;
John proudly served the United States during World War II. He loved camping and traveling and spent thirty three winters in Mission, Texas. John was a member of Old Union Baptist Church. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Hughey funeral home with Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will follow with full military rites with Chaplain Ernie Collins at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital or the Alheimers Association.
