Jim C. Bennett, 87, passed away on February 27, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. Jim was born on April 4, 1930 in Energy, Illinois, the son of the late Jesse and Sylvia (Kirby) Bennett. In 1954, he married Betty Hall, and together they were blessed with 64 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Melodi Sheffer and husband, Marshall of Marion and Robin Stowers and husband, Jim of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Brittany Sheffer of Saint Louis, Jared (Ashley) Sheffer of Carbondale, and Jonathan Stowers of Rock Island; and great-grandson, Jayce of Saint Louis. Jim is also survived by his special cousins, Brenda Bratcher and Delores Potter and close friends, Hank Brumley and Alan Norris.
After serving in the Army, Jim began his career as a tool and die maker. In 1967, at age 37, he established Bennett Metal Products, Inc. The business has experienced continual growth and expansion during its 50 years of operation. In 1997, Jim also became a part owner of the newly established Midwestern Machine & Hydraulics. Jim always had a deep respect and appreciation for the individuals with whom he worked. He always credited his employees for his business success.
He was a member of the Energy First Baptist Church.
As a husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be missed by those who loved him.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Herrin City Cemetery in Herrin, Illinois.
