James A Newbury

October 14, 1926 ~ March 4, 2019 (age 92)

James A. Newbury, 92, of Bluford, Illinois passed away at 7:10 A.M. March 4, 2019 at Mount Vernon Healthcare Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born October 14, 1926 in Waltonville, Illinois to the late James Harrison Newbury and Flossie Della (French) Newbury. He married Doris Eileen (Dennis) Houle on August 6, 1954 in Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were blessed with 64 years of marriage until he preceded her in death.

James is survived by his three sons, Randy Lee Houle and wife, Helen of Paris, Illinois, James Kevin Newbury and wife, Debra of Opdyke, Illinois, and Ronald Gene Newbury of Terre Haute, Indiana; twelve grandchildren, Daphne Jordan and husband, John of Bluford, Illinois, Jennifer Oliver and husband, Rob of Bluford, Illinois, Chandra Ballard of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Jamie Houle of North Vernon, Indiana, Ciera Balkenbusch and husband, Craig of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Cassandra Smith and husband, Brent of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Brian Newbury of Opdyke, Illinois, Zachary Houle of Terre Haute, Indiana, Joshua Houle of Paris, Illinois, Jeremy Houle of Noblesville, Indiana, Brandon Houle of Bluford, Illinois, and Chad Houle of Bluford, Illinois; 1 step granddaughter, Jennifer Fagan; Twenty three great grandchildren, Molly Houle of Bluford, Illinois, Chaira Houle of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Samantha Leneave and husband Brandon of Bluford, Illinois, Karlee Ann Skelton, Victoria Ballard of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Makaila Ballard of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Destani Houle of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Summer Alexis Douglass of Opdyke, Illinois, Gavin Wyatt Douglas,  Greylan Smith, Austin Ballard of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Remington Houle of Bluford, Illinois, Tiernan Houle of Bluford, Illinois, Braelynn Houle, Carson Lee Houle of Paris, Illinois, Mattox Houle, Serenity Bryant of Bluford, Illinois, Mia Balkenbusch of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Oliver Howard Blankenbusch, Chloe Balkenbusch, Jackson Houle, Joshua Houle, and Carlee Houle; three great-great grandsons, Adrian Reice Justice, Kash Thomas Fraizer, and Deklan Settle; one great-great granddaughter, Penelope Ballard; two step great grandchildren, Asa Smith and Hannah Smith; sister, Elsie Martin of Aurora, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Sue Ann Newbury of Yuma, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

 James was preceded in death by his parents, James Harrison Newbury and Flossie Della (French) Newbury, son, Gary Houle; grandson, Derek Houle; granddaughter, Margaret Wheeler;  great grandson, Journey Houle; five sisters, Vivian Jewell Newbury, Goldie McCluskey, Anne Sigwerth, Etta Morgan, and Stella Smothers; and one brother, Glen Newbury.

James proudly served the United States Navy during World War II and later he served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a prisoner of war from April of 1951 until September of 1953 in North Korea. James retired in 1986 from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Crab Orchard Lake, Carterville, Illinois. He was a member of the American Legion Post 141 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Ex-POW Association, and the Illinois Ex-POW Association. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home with Mr. Randy Sells and Mr. J. Howard Kraps officiating.  Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois.  Full Military rites will be conducted at graveside by members of American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon.
