Helen C. Hassakis, 92, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 6:49 A.M. Sunday, March 10, 2019 at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born on Tuesday, January 18, 1927 in St. Louis, MO to William and Ruby (Tampakis) Coukoulis. She attended public school in St. Louis and Miss Hickey’s Business College for Women.
In May, 1948, Helen met Demetri (Dee) Hassakis of Mt. Vernon, IL on a blind date. He was a senior at the University Of Illinois School Of Law. They were married in St. Louis on December 26, 1948. He preceded her in death on September 20, 2003 after 55 years of marriage. Helen was a stay-at-home mom raising her son, Mark, and daughter, Marybeth. She enjoyed volunteering for her children’s activities and organizations, schools, church, and numerous projects. She also served on the board of Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary. She was active in the YMCA, past president of the Mount Vernon Arts and Humanities. Helen was a member of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Charity Society. She was a member of the Friends of Cedarhurst, docent for the Jefferson County Historical Village, and the United Methodist Children’s Home Auxiliary. Helen was a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Swansea, IL and an associate member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Vernon, IL.
She is survived by son, Mark D. and devoted daughter-in-law, Janet S. of Mt. Vernon, IL; daughter, Marybeth Bolerjack and special son-in-law, Thomas D. (Tom) of Austin, TX; and very special granddaughter, Hallie Alexis Hassakis and her husband, Larry R. Henderson of Washington, D. C.; sister, Mary C. Mastorakos and nephew, Dr. William L. (Bill) Mastorakos, both of St. Louis, MO; step granddaughter, Christine E. Bolerjack and step great grandsons, Jay and Lucus Webb, all of Mt. Vernon; nieces, Greta Hassakis of Seattle, WA and Linda Hassakis of San Diego, CA; sister-in-law, Patricia Hassakis of Santa Monica, CA; great nephew, Parker; great nieces, Hannah and Paige Mastorakos of St. Louis, MO; and many cousins in the United States, Australia, and Greece.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, grandson, M. Denny Hassakis; step grandson, Jason M. Bolerjack; and brothers-in-law, C. J. Hassakis and Dr. Leo Mastorakos.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home with Reverend Victor Long officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to M. Denny Hassakis Fund through Illinois Bar Foundation for at risk youth and juvenile justice throughout Southern Illinois and State Wide or to the Jefferson County Historical Village.
