Hazel Austin, 89, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 10:53 A.M. July 13, 2018 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was born July 5, 1929 in Mount Vernon to the late Walter and Julia (Mundy) Biggerstaff. Hazel married Oval H. Austin on March 27, 1948 in Mount Vernon. They were blessed with nearly 46 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 9, 1994.
Hazel is survived by her children, David Austin and wife, Vesta of Mount Vernon and Peggy Sims and husband, Danny of Dix; grandchildren, Brandi Austin, Crystal Rios, Bradley Austin, Eric Austin, Justin Sims, Matthew Sims, Janelle Dearing, Katie Austin, and Rebecca Kane; nineteen great-grandchildren; brother, Adrian Biggerstaff of Mount Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by her children, Oval H. Austin, Jr. and Vickie Lynn Austin; and siblings, Edward Biggerstaff, Molly Martin, Pearl Thomason, Beulah Scott, Ruby Panzier, and Edith Casey.
Hazel worked for many years as a CNA at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was of the Baptist faith. Hazel’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2018 from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Chapel in Woodlawn, Illinois. A Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Hazel’s honor to The Amy Center or Jefferson County Animal Shelter.
