George E. Puckett, Sr., 87, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 3:41 P.M. January 9, 2018 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born August 29, 1930 in McClellan Township of Jefferson County, Illinois to Arthur L. & Susie (Earls) Puckett. He married Reba Austin on June 12, 1951 in Jefferson County, Illinois and they were blessed with 66 years together.
Mr. Puckett is survived by his wife, Reba Puckett of Mount Vernon, Illinois; 2 sons, George Puckett, Jr. of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Thomas Lee Puckett and wife, Charlene of Chicago Heights, Illinois; 3 daughters, Sherry Hann and husband, Steve of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Rita Bula and husband, Matt of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Karen Willis and husband, Toby of Mount Vernon, Illinois; 13 grandchildren, Eric Shelton (Amber); Erin Robinson (Rob), Jennifer Lane (Scott), Sarah Corbett (Dave), Tiffany Cunning (Andy), Jessica Bula and fiance, Austin McDermott, Joshua Bula, Michael Karpik(Sandra), Angela Thurston (Steve), Justin Puckett and fiancee, Denise Rodriguez, Bob Willis (Amber), Colten Willis and fiancee, Jennifer Houseworth, and Alyssa and finance, Michael Panzier; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; 2 expected great-great-granddaughters; 2 brothers, Milton Puckett (Kay) of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Troy Puckett (Diane) of Mount Vernon, Illinois; 2 sisters, Stella Patterson of Danforth, Illinois and Janette Smith (Gerald) of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cindy Shelton; infant brother, Leo Puckett; brother, Arthur G. Puckett; sister, Christine Shannon; mother and father-in-law, Lawrence & Opal Austin; 2 brothers-in-law, Paul Patterson and Todd Shannon; 2 sisters-in-law, Helen Puckett and Cleta Puckett; and great-granddaughter, Esther Jimmalou Cunning.
Mr. Puckett proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1953. He was a hardworking man who always put others before himself. His greatest joy was being around his family as he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He worked in the Electromotive Division at General Motors in La Grange, Illinois. After retirement, he proudly cared for the grounds at South Hickory Hill Cemetery. He loved tinkering in his garage, working on his car, and could fix anything. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until funeral service time: 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 12, 2018 at East Salem Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Reverend Randy Hayes officiating. Interment: South Hickory Hill Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Hickory Hill Cemetery.
