Gene Johnston, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 3:45 A.M. August 25, 2018 at his residence in Mount Vernon, the same home he was born in. He was born February 4, 1932 in Mount Vernon to the late James Warner and Helen (Fisher) Johnston. Gene married Irene (Osborn) Johnston on February 8, 1962 in Vienna, Illinois. They were blessed with 38 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on September 12, 2000.
Gene is survived by his siblings, Bill Johnston and wife, Janet of Mount Vernon, Larry Johnston and wife, Laura of Mount Vernon, and Linda Geary and husband, Bob; special friends, Kitty Graham of Mount Vernon and Bob and Lisa Swan of Mount Vernon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents and wife, Gene was preceded in death by his children, Gaylene Smothers and Gary Osborn.
Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years at General Radiator and Superior Rehab Center, now known as Nova Care. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Masonic Service, conducted by #31 AF&AM, will be begin at 7:30 P.M. after the visitation. A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, August 30, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Mr. Randy Sells officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion Post #141. Interment will follow.
