Earl R. Downes, 79, of Woodlawn, Illinois passed away with his family by his side at 6:40 A.M. October 20, 2019 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born September 6, 1940 in Woodlawn, Illinois to the late Edward Earl and Beulah Evelyn (Wilson) Downes. He married Joyce Marie Owens in 1960. She preceded him in death. Earl later married Karla Jean Warren in 1998 and she preceded him in death in 2010.
Earl is survived by his children, Deborah Marlow and husband, Greg of Dix, Illinois, Donna Whisenhunt and husband, Kenny of Woodlawn, Illinois, Darla Kelley and husband, Kevin of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Dinah Bielong and husband, Mike of Highland, Illinois, Dixie Devros and husband, Scott of Livermore, California, Daisy Jan Mellott and husband, James of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Dawn Burkett Chapman and husband, Steve of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Carmen “Angie” Burkett Reece of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Jason Burkett and wife, Stacey of Mount Vernon, Illinois, John Burkett and wife, Heather of Dix, Illinois, and Jeff Burkett and wife, Brandy of Woodlawn, Illinois; grandchildren, Julie and husband, Jake, Elizabeth and husband, Nick, Jennifer and husband, Mike, Jessica, Mariah, Ryan and wife, Brittany, Lydia, Jarod Downes, Chelsea, Jacob, Sydney, Cameron, Christina and husband, Anthony, Chelsea and husband, Nick, Cassie and husband, Dylan, Alexandrea and husband, Zach, Samuel, Tyler and wife, Morgan, J.J., Jaid, Jase, Madison, Carson, and Kendra and husband, John; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Paige, Peyton, D.J., Tynsley, Gracelynn, Marleigh, Ashlee, Lucas, Mason, Jackson, Race, River, Rain; great-great-grandchildren, Febie and Sofie; sister, Betty Crim of Mount Vernon, Illinois; cherished dog, Sissy; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wives, Earl was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Krista; brothers-in-law, Henry Crim and Marvin Owens.
Mr. Downes worked for General Radiator for twenty-eight years before they closed. He then worked several years in construction. Earl was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Mount Vernon. He loved being outdoors, mowing, tending to his garden, and cutting wood. Earl’s greatest joy of all was spending time with his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2019 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Frederick Young officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
