Dr. Eugene T. Estes passed away at 10:07 A.M. on October 30, 2019. He was born January 6, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Roy and Altha Todd Estes. On June 1, 1949, he married Retta Halena Hayes in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Dr. Estes graduated from Mount Vernon Township High School, received his AB from Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky, and his Masters and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He also served two years in the United States Navy (1946-1947). He taught seven years at Woodlawn High School (Illinois) and one year in Hammond, Indiana in the city school system. He joined the science faculty of Mount Vernon Community (Junior) College, and in 1960, and retired from Rend Lake College in 1991 with a total of 38 years of teaching.
He was an active member of the United Methodist church and pastored churches in rural Ashley, Carmi, rural McLeansboro, and Bonnie, Illinois
Dr. Estes is survived by his wife, Retta; two daughters, Kathie (Dale) Colwell of Bluford, Mary (Dan) Farmer of Bonnie; six grandchildren, Shaina (Jeremy) Jackson of Marion, Duke Farmer of Mount Vernon, Kwort (Chelsey) Farmer of Woodlawn, Butch (Sarah) Farmer of Marion, Kendra (Steve) Kashycke of Fairview Heights, and Quinn (Erica) Colwell of St. Louis; one sister, Mona (Clem) Rybacki of Las Vegas. He is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Jennie Ruth Lewis and Eloise Wall), and two brothers-in-law.
Dr. Estes loved God, the church, his family and friends, traveling, wood carving, puns, and photographing all of God’s Creation. He visited all of the 50 United States of America. He lived a life that defined kindness, integrity, and loyalty.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Bud Storey officiating. Interment will follow at Hopewell Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hopewell Cemetery Association.
