Donald Cecil Laughmiller, 94, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 6:30 P.M. on January 9, 2019 at Nature Trail Nursing Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born August 14, 1924 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Marshall Laughmiller and Gladys Lila (Carr) Laughmiller. He married Coral Lee Scott on October 12, 1947 and to this union five children were born. He later married Mary Byram (Norris) Laughmiller on September 14, 1989 at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were blessed with twenty-nine years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Mary Byram (Norris) Laughmiller, Donald is survived by his children, Marshal Donald Laughmiller and wife, Dorothy of Navarre, Florida; James Robert Laughmiller of Mount Vernon, Illinois; Lila Lee Speidel of Texico, Illinois; and Nina Kay Dycus and husband, Robert of Mount Vernon, Illinois; ten grandchildren, Marsha Ward, Lonnie Speidel, Kimvan Rossum, Cara Emrich, Christina Cheek, Amanda Bahm, Kaylee Dycus, Kaycee Dycus, Kaydee Dycus, and Kenzee Dycus; twelve great grandchildren; three step children, Sandra Drennan, David Byram and Kenneth Byram; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and sister, Marilyn Roloff and husband Ron of Odesa, Texas.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Laughmiller and Gladys Lila (Carr) Laughmiller; daughter, Anna Ruth Langenberg; infant brother, William Laughmiller; and son-in-law, Mike Speidel.
Don proudly served the United States Army Air Corps at Pangahar Air Force Base in India during WWII. As part of his military time, he served his fourth year in Florida as a radio repairman. He loved wearing his WWII Veterans cap. Don worked at IL Power as a dispatcher and retired after 33 years. He was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church since 1934 where he was a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Choir Member, Trustee, Co-Youth Director, and Music Director during the Church Radio Programs. In high school Don received his music letter for violin and choir and was hired to sing for the Jewish Temple in Benton, Illinois. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW, ARRL (Amateur Radio Relay League), and the NRA. He was a member of Modern Woodmen of America, and a retired member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a 4-H leader. Don will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. at Newell Funeral Home at 601 South 42nd Street in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Brother Alan Smith officiating. Interment will follow full military rites by the American Legion Post #141 at Bethel Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Logan Street Baptist Church Building Fund.
