Bettie Jo Griffith, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 2:25 A.M. August 28, 2019 at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. She was born February 23, 1933 in Bryan County, Oklahoma to the late Joe Richard and Dorcas Viola (Hull) Burge.
Bettie is survived by her children, Joyce Wheeler and husband, Terry of Mount Vernon, Dusty Griffith of Mount Vernon, Rick Griffith and wife, Charlene of Woodlawn, and Dorrie Rapp and husband, Tony of Dahlgren; grandchildren, Sheila Peterson and husband, Pete of Woodlawn, Mike Wheeler of Mount Vernon, Tisha Graf and husband, Josh of Buckinham, Illinois, Dusten Griffith and wife, Brittany of Creal Springs, Illinois, Gabriel Conkel and husband, Wendell of Clarksville, Tennessee, Rachel Johnson and husband, Duane of Mount Vernon, Jarrod Griffith and husband, Derrick Gentles of Woodlawn, Jamie Rapp of Saint Charles, Missouri, Melissa Schulz and husband, Ken of Yorktown, Virginia, Kathleen Banyea and husband, Mike of Swanton, Vermont, and Lindsay Stranz and husband, Scott of Saint Peters, Missouri; twenty-six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Glenna Feiock and husband, Frank of Ardmore, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews, including Tony Hutchison and wife, Karen of Ardmore, Oklahoma, who was raised in her home.
In addition to her parents, Bettie was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine and brother, Sonny.
Bettie worked as a secretary at Fairmont Supply for many years. She also worked as a cook at Bethel School, was a laborer at Lewis Manufacturing, and a secretary at Rend Lake College. She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church and was also a member of the Mount Vernon Elks and Moose Lodge. Bettie was an avid bowler and enjoyed camping and fishing in her spare time. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bettie was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
A Greeting of Family and Friends will be held Friday, August 30, 2019 from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Memorial Service will follow at 6:00 P.M. with Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating.
